Craig Houghton Elementary School
East Richmond County comprises as student population of inner-city and urban student population. A new school to occupy a very small existing site, required a unique design allowing the minimum footprint while allowing maximum usage of the site for playgrounds and circulation. A two-story elementary school with the concept of a community center was developed for replacement of Peter H. Craig and Houghton Elementary schools in downtown, Augusta. The new school houses pre-k through fifth grades, a media center, administration, art, and music rooms. A physical education/dining area is locate on one end, acting as a community center, allowing dual usage for Augusta. Before the development of this design for the new elementary school, Augusta has no such community area, other than a public space for basketball. The exterior design incorporates details from the existing Houghton School which is historically significant in its Mediterranean style. The interior spaces are designed with primary colors and geometric shapes to stimulate the learning environment for elementary children.
