The Hospital Authority for Athens Regional Medical Center required additional space for administrative and support services to the hospital. Part of the campus master plan, the new medical services building is a three story structure with a full basement located behind the existing hospital. In order to blend with the existing buildings on the hospital campus, as well as fit the context of the surrounding historic neighborhood, the design is composed of a combination of small and large volumes with a red brick and stucco façade. Differing roof levels help reduce the visual scale of the building, so that it has more of a residential feeling, as opposed to that of a large office building. Each façade provides an entry into different departments, all of which are connected by the main lobby. The front porch of the building, facing west, has glass walls that provide natural light and views into an exercise area. The east facing façade provides a covered drop off at the main entrance lobby. A large auditorium on the top floor includes a sloped floor and is available for public use as well as hospital use. |
