East Richmond County consists of an urban student population requiring a new school to occupy a small existing site. This necessitated a unique design allowing for a minimal footprint while allowing maximum site usage for playgrounds and circulation. The replacement of Peter H. Craig and Houghton Elementary schools was conceptualized as a joint elementary school and community center. The new school houses pre-k through fifth grades and includes a media center, art, and music rooms. A physical education/dining area located on one end acts as a community center. Before developing this new elementary school, Augusta had no community area, other than a public space for basketball. The exterior design incorporates details from the existing Houghton School, historically significant in its Mediterranean style. The interior spaces are designed with primary colors and geometric shapes to stimulate the learning environment for elementary children. |
