S3DG was commissioned by Curtis Baptist Church to design an addition to its historic downtown campus, which includes a new children’s educational space, a state of the art choir practice suite and a large open welcome center. The educational spaces accommodate the needs of the church’s elementary school, daycare, and growing Sunday school programs. The welcome center, attached to the historic sanctuary, provides an area for the congregation to join in fellowship between church services. One of the added attractions is the children’s “Noah’s Ark” feature, which houses the church’s nursery center. As you peer through each portal, you can see murals of the animals which are on board. A brand new playground also adds to the fun educational experience. There were two significant challenges to overcome to successfully complete the design. First, the design team gained approval to close a road that dissected the church’s property. Traffic was diverted to an adjoining thoroughfare via a new connection developed by the team. Secondly, the design needed approval by Augusta’s Historic Design Review Board. The new facilities were designed to blend with the existing architecture and historic campus. |
