The new Richmond Hill K-8 Replacement School replaces the older Sego Middle School and Rollins Elementary School facilities, both built in the 1960s, as part of Richmond County's right-size initiative. The design for Richmond Hill focuses on a core space that includes the cafetorium, gymnasium, media center, chorus, band, and visual art spaces, all shared by the K-8 students. Three classroom wings radiate from the core area. Pre-K thru 2nd grade occupy one wing with a drop-off canopy. Grades 3rd - 5th are in a second wing, and grades 6th - 8th are in the 3rd wing with another drop-off canopy. S3DG chose a moderate, vibrant design for the school. Exterior materials include three colors of brick, five colors of ACM panels, and expanses of storefront glazing. A large amount of exterior glazing provides plenty of natural light to the interior spaces of the building to enhance the students learning experience. There is a planned expansion of 4 classrooms, at the end of each wing, for a total of 12 additional classrooms. |
